A key component of any application or data migration project is the migration of business data from the existing systems to the new one. It is highly advisable not to view the data migration component as only a minor, technical aspect of an application migration project instead of as a strategic project in its own right. This is almost always a very costly error which leads to cost overruns, schedule overruns, and sometimes the outright failure of the entire application migration effort. This is because data migration does not lend itself to "quick fix" solutions, but instead demands taking a fundamental look at the years of accumulated problems which exist within the legacy data and solving them before these problems reduce the value of the new application (at best), or render it non-functional or untrusted and unused (at worst).
The old IT expression "garbage in, garbage out" is highly relevant here. When the new application is overburdened from day one with incomplete, inconsistent, duplicated, and mis-categorized information, its operational performance will suffer. De-duplication and consolidation of multiple records which actually refer to the same entity (product, part, customer, vendor, account, etc.) is an important step in enabling, for example, successful supply chain management, effective sales campaigns, and accurate reporting. Proper mapping of data structures from the one or more existing applications to the new one is critical. Unlike legacy applications, which may have extensive embedded business logic to handle various problematic situations, the new application will not be able to effectively handle exceptions without additional effort.
ETL (extract, transform, load) tools help in the process, but their basic filtering and transformation functions do not address the range of painful data quality issues which can cripple a data migration endeavor. Powerful de-duplication, cross-linking, cleansing, normalization, and classification of the incoming data should be performed, based on a deep understanding of the source data, its structure, and its business uses.
It is much easier to comprehensively address data quality issues before and during the migration instead of afterwards. Furthermore, while an application migration project is an ideal time to address data quality issues, data quality is not a one-time activity.
